WEE HOUSE BY THE SEA: LIVE 55° BRIGHTER

A coastal retreat giving therapy to sufferers of Seasonal Affective Disorder through connection with the Scottish climate.

WEE HOUSE BY THE SEA is a small dwelling located amongst the sand dunes in a small village on the west coast of Scotland, Lendalfoot. The concept is based on allowing sufferers of S.A.D. to gain a better understanding of the climate they live in and in turn help them to manage their condition on a day-to-day basis.

The 20m2 structure is a sustainable build that works off the grid using solar power for electricity, a rainwater harvesting system, compost toilet & wood-burning stove. Encouraging users to focus on how to work with the environment and use it to their advantage will help to encourage a positive outlook towards the climate.

Inspired by 1950/60s beach houses and Lendalfoot’s history the building is designed to nest into the landscape and provide a place for building a connection with nature. As a base for hill walking, coastal exploration, kayaking, star gazing, seal watching (from the roof top deck) and general relaxation the concept promotes users to focus on the importance of living a ‘simple life’ and ensures time for a release from the pressures of everyday life. The exterior of the retreat is constructed from primarily wood and glass working with an interior of wood, neutral plasterboard and blue/grey furnishings which all reflect the surrounding environment of sand, marram grass, the sea & big skies. The cedar wood cladding on the exterior is in keeping with the surrounding houses and how they have been through generations.

There is a dawn stimulator system in place for those dark winter mornings ensuring a positive start to the day all year round.  Several cleverly positioned skylights allow for maximum light to flow into the interior space. Whether it’s star gazing from the comfort of bed or enjoying a refreshing start to the day in the “sun shower” these skylights give further opportunity for the users to relish their surroundings.

The compact nature of the build encourages outdoor living where possible whilst also supporting a cosy lifestyle when necessary. The space endeavours to work to optimum levels in all seasons something that is very important with the unpredictable nature of Scotland’s climate.

The concept is designed to work alongside ‘The Seasonal Affective Association’ (SADA) which is the UK’s only registered charity dedicated to Seasonal Affective Disorder.  This would allow for the service to be offered to S.A.D. sufferers through an organisation they already trust. The sustainable element of the design allows for running costs to be kept low meaning rental charges can be kept to a minimum if not dropped completely.

The concept allows for expansion to other locations in the future allowing for brighter living at every latitude.
