ART, SCIENCE & VISUAL THINKING: THE MANUFACTURED FOREST

“The Manufactured Forest” highlights the importance of the need for tree conservation throughout Scotland through the investigation of the process of cell division. I have been looking closely at the different stages of mitosis, especially in plant cells. My research has highlighted the complexity of this timely process and the effect this has on the production of timber based products. The growth cycle of a softwood tree may take up to 30 years while the hardwood tree can have up to a 300 year life cycle. It is important to highlight the relationship between the “readily available” manmade wood products such as OSB, MDF & PLYWOOD back to the tree in its natural form. Tree growth is a very long process and the consumers of these wood based products need to be more aware of the extent of this.
